Barcelona

Gaudí, beaches and late dinners: a city that does culture and downtime equally well.

Reviewed October 2026. Times and rules change, so check before you travel.

When to go

May to June and September to October are warm without the August crowds and heat. Winters are mild and quiet.

Getting in from the airport

Barcelona–El Prat (BCN) is about 12 km south-west of the centre. The Aerobús runs to Plaça de Catalunya in around 35 minutes, Metro line L9 Sud serves both terminals, and the R2 Nord train runs from Terminal 2.

Where to stay

Gothic Quarter & El Born

Medieval lanes, tapas bars and the Picasso Museum.

Eixample

The grid of grand avenues with Casa Batlló and the Sagrada Família.

Gràcia

A village feel, small squares and independent shops.

Barceloneta

Seafood, the beach and the promenade.

What to book ahead

  • Book a timed ticket for the Sagrada Família well ahead; slots sell out in peak season.
  • Park Güell's monumental zone also needs a timed ticket.
  • Walk up Montjuïc for views, gardens and the Fundació Joan Miró.
  • Graze through La Boqueria market early, before the crowds.
